DETAILS: The Lolita costumes came into fashion sometime in early 2001,
right around the Malice Mizer era.
A few people have asked me if I was willing to make a Lolita costume. I was, but it took me two years to
get the costume out there. What
can I say? I’ve been kind of
lazy lately.
I wanted to use a blue gingham fabric for the costume idea. However, when I went to the Discount
Fabrics in the Mission/ Excelsior District, they had this gingham fabric with
daisies on them. I thought it
was a nice twist to the typical gingham fabric you would normally find. Just like the Little Miss Santa’s
Helper costume, I used the same McCalls French maid pattern… except, I
created bell sleeves for the blouse to give the costume more of a unique
likeness. The most challenging
part of the costume was making the bustier. Adding the lining was just murder; that fabric has a mind
of its own. One of my favorite items
is the little bonnet. What’s the
secret to keep it from falling off my head, you ask? I added a couple of ribbon loops to
the edge of the bonnet, where I place bobby pins to keep it secured in my
hair. The only thing I didn’t
make was the petticoat; I purchased it at Piedmont’s Boutique in the Haight/
Ashbury area.
