NAME OF CHARACTER: Misato Katsuragi
ANIME SERIES: Neon Genesis Evangelion
COSTUME STATUS: 100% made by Claudine
Roselle Puente
COSTUME DEBUT: Anime Central 2002
DETAILS: This costume is one of my all time favorites... unless
you want to count the part where I'm always complaining about my boot cover
repairs. *laughs* To be totally honest with you, I've only seen two
episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series. I made the costume
for a So Desu Ne Cosplay Skit back at ACEN 2002. One of the members
thought I would be perfect for the part of Misato. I liked the idea,
but I wasn't too crazy about making the costume. I knew what kind of
fabric was needed for the jacket. Instead of spending countless amounts of
money on PVC, I decided to purchase pleather. It's not shiny, but hey,
it almost looks like leather. When I told mom about what I was
planning, she said, "Claudine, are you sure you wanna do this? Just
remember -- if you make one mistake, you have to start all over again."
I promised that I would be careful, and not to panic.
No pattern?! Okay, start panicking. Again, I was stuck with
absolutely no pattern for the jacket. Time to look at some good photos
and test my ever so moderate visual memory... if I still have it. Well,
I took all my measurements and decided to more or less play it by ear, or
should I say, "by eye"? It wasn't as hard as I thought it
would be. Oh, I did mess up a few times, but it wasn't to a point where
I had to start all over again. *whew!* All in all, I think the jacket
turned out really great. :) The badges and the black trim design was
pure felt. The dress for Misato was made of black lycra, and taken from
my patterns used for the DDR costumes I made for an Anime Expo skit back in
2001. The only difference is, this dress has a turtleneck, while the
DDR dresses were made with a V-shaped neck lining. Another similarity
are the shoes. Yes, they are the same 5 inch pumps I wore for the DDR
Sailor Jupiter Costume. With the extra black lycra that I had, I used
it to make boot covers, which are the exact same length as before, only
folded inward towards the ankle.
